He was born on May 21, 1927 in New Portland a son of Alfred William Dyer Sr. and Eva (Merrill) Dyer. After high school he enlisted in the United States Army, serving as an MP during World War II and later during the Korean Conflict.

He was employed as a custodian as well as a bus driver for the local school department. Earlier he was the police chief for the town of Mars Hill and was a police officer in the town of Bingham. He worked at Quimby's Mill, was a fire warden in Moscow, a long term member of the Moscow Planning Board, an accomplished carpenter and builder. He and his wife Alice owned and operated Moose Horn Minis, building doll houses and was commissioned to build several scale models of historic buildings and museums. For a time he was a woodsman working in the woods, he was a master gardener, in later years his friends and family would come and help him tend to the gardens. He was also a Eucharistic Minister at St Peters Catholic church. He was a story teller, a joker, and a wealth of knowledge. He would frequently say that a man should learn at least one thing every day. Alfred was extremely proud of being a weather watcher for WCSH TV and putting Moscow on the map.

Alfred was a kind and loving man who would always do the right thing, He often would set aside things that he needed to do just to help someone else out. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, he was an excellent marksman. He liked to spend time with his family and friends. He will be best remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and good friend.

He was predeceased by his loving wife Alice, they were married 49 years, he was also predeceased by a son, Charles, and a sister Bertice.

Alfred is survived by his children, Cathy McFarlane and her husband Paul of Chelsea, Cindy Kelley and her partner Ted Dahlin of Rhode Island and Alfred Dyer III and his wife Bonnie of Fairfield.
