MADISON:

Gary Richard Dyer, 77, peacefully left this mortal world on April 16, 2017 at his home after a brief illness. He was born in Madison on December 20, 1939 the oldest child of Maurice J. and Mary (Flanagin) Dyer. He graduated from Madison High School, attended the University of Maine at Orono and graduated from Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute. Gary was also a medic in the Air National Guard. He married Terri Moffitt on September 5, 1964.

Gary is survived by his wife of 52 years, Terri; his son Jason and wife Katie, and a beautiful granddaughter, Erin. He leaves his sisters Gloria (Snooky) Garnett (Ralph) of Lisbon Falls and Cheryl Bess (Dennis) of Madison, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and Troy Johnson, whom he always considered his second son. He is predeceased by his parents, sister Bobbie Jean Moss, and brother John Dyer.

He worked for many years with his father at M.J. Dyer & Sons and then ran his own business; Gary’s Kar Shop, for thirty five years before retiring. In retirement he became a volunteer driver for the Kennebec Valley Community Action Program. He was very passionate and proud to be associated with KVCAP, and enjoyed interacting with his clients of all ages. When he asked his clients why they enjoyed riding with him, they said “You talk with us.”

Even as a very young child playing with his little cars, Gary had a passion for automobiles, and always had at least one convertible. He started participating in Madison area Memorial Day parades and festivals at the age of 15 and continued throughout his life. He organized convertibles and drivers for local events, as needed by the American Legion, V.F.W. and other local organizations, for over four decades.

Graveside services will be held at St. Sebastian Cemetery on Saturday, July 8th at 10:30 a.m. followed by a celebration of his life at the American Legion.
