Jackman

Magdalena (Hofler) Quirion passed away quietly on Saturday, April 13th, 2024 surrounded by her immediate family. Marley, (as she was known by friends and family), was born on April 14, 1926 in Torgau, Germany, the daughter of Otto Karl Hofler and Emma Geb Dahmas, both of Germany. She grew up and survived the horrors of World War II, although having been separated from her family. In her early adulthood she worked as a Kindergarten nurse before being hired as a head waitress at one of the mess halls for American troops. She moved in with the Cluk family in Lenggries, Bavaria, who welcomed her as their own and they would become her second family. It was here where she met her future husband Carleton Moore who was a U.S. soldier stationed in Germany. On October 13, 1953 they welcomed their firstborn son Harald Karl Moore. On March 8, 1954 Carleton was discharged from the Army and returned to the States. Marley, with her young son, followed him by ship a few months later arriving at Ellis Island, NY. and then moving to Moose River, and Jackman, Maine where she became part of the community. On July 4, 1955 a second son, Mark Frederick Moore, joined the family. Marley became a naturalized citizen on May 16 1963.

Marley was reunited with her sister Brunhilde (Inge) Asteger and her husband Leo in the mid to late 1960’s. They visited with each other both here in the states and in Ebensee, Austria several times over the years.

In the early 1980’s she and Carleton separated and she remarried Jules Quirion of Jackman. Several years later she separated again and moved to the Forrest Haven Apartments for senior citizens where she resided for over twenty years before moving to Tissues Country Estates in Athens, Maine.

Marlay worked at Henderson’s Camps in Jackman cleaning cabins and doing laundry for all the summer quests, before going to work at the Jackman Regional Health Center as a CNA for over twenty years until her retirement. She enjoyed taking care of the many patients and residents over the years.

Over the years Marlay had many good friends, and was considered the life of the party, no matter where she was. She was very comical and kept everyone laughing. She enjoyed playing cards and visiting with friends and family. She was an excellent cook, especially pastries. She also enjoyed crocheting and made many afghans to give to friends and family.

Marley is predeceased by her two husbands and her sister Inge and her husband Leo and a nephew Hubert whom she was fond of.

Marley is survived by her two sons Harald Moore and his wife, Karen of Moose River, and Mark Moore and his wife Francine of Jackman. Four grandchildren, Seth Moore and his wife Melissa of Lisbon, Chris Moore of Portland, Marisa Achey and her husband Rocky of Dennistown, and Brandon Moore and partner Erica Jackson of Benton. Four great grandchildren, Connor and Liam Achey of Dennistown, Hayden Moore of Lisbon, and Leah Moore and Brooklyn Allen of Benton.

She is also survived by her special and loved nieces and grandnieces of Austria; Angelika (Gucki) Orosel of Vienna and Ebensee, Austria, Gabi Orosel and her companion Hubert Ortner and their daughter, Emma of Gablitz, Austria, Anna Orosel of Vienna, Austria and Connie Orosel of Ebensee, Austria

She also had four stepdaughters, Sharon Bent of Jackman, Christa Dillihunt of Augusta, Dena Demurs of Portland and LuAnn Clukey of Bingham.

Per her wishes, a brief graveside service will be held on May 18th, 2024 at 10:30 at the Whipple Cemetery in Jackman.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the paramedic program of Jackman. Make out checks to the Town of Jackman and specify Paramedics program in the “For” section. Donations may also be made in her name to the Somerset County Animal Shelter in Skowhegan, Maine if you should desire.
