SOLON- Alma Louise French, 97, passed away peacefully on May 21, 2018. Alma was a life-long resident of Solon. She was born in Solon on January 12, 1921 the daughter of Aubrey and Arah (Libby) Kelley. Alma married Abbott Withers in 1940 and they raised four children together. Her husband passed away in 1978 and she later married Floyd French. Alma was a local correspondent for the Bangor Daily News, a postal clerk, and a cook in the school's cafeteria in earlier years. She later trained as a beautician and operated a beauty shop in town for 35 years. In her spare time, Alma enjoyed painting, traveling, spending time at the lake, and volunteering at the Methodist Thrift Shop where she met many new friends. But her greatest interest was always focused on her family. She will be greatly missed by all that were fortunate enough to have known her.
Alma was predeceased by both husbands, her daughter Anne Burkhart and her brother Robert Kelley. She is survived by her three sons and their families; James Withers and his wife Bette of Echo Bay, Ontario, their children Micheal and Kelly Grandchildren; Emily, Michelle, James, and Sydney. Great Grandchildren; Liam, Annabelle, and Micah. Stephen Withers and wife Susan of Derry, New Hampshire. Children; Scott and Gregory. Grandchildren; Samuel and Elizabeth. Gary Withers and wife Linda of Waterville, Maine. Children; Lesley and Bradley. Grandchildren; Ethan and Elise. Survivors also include her sisters-in-law Edith Kelley Of Enfield, Connecticut and Barbara Withers of Chillicothe, Ohio. Son-in-law William Burkhart of Skowhegan, Maine. Her good friend Walter Duplisea of Solon, as well as several nephews and nieces.
At Alma's request there will be no visiting hours or funeral service. A memorial gathering may be held later at the family's convenience.
