Harold Mayhew Obituary

It comes with great sadness Harold C. Mayhew of Solon, Maine passed away April 18, 2022 with his son Phil Gehrke, Brother Alden Mayhew and Sister Charlene Lyons by his side.

Harold was born to James Mayhew and Verna (Dunbar) Mayhew November 15, 1942 in Madison, Maine. He was the fourth child of seven.

Harold Joined the US Army in 1964, and served in Vietnam. His total service time was six years

After getting out of the service, Harold worked for Morris Trucking in Bingham. He later got his own truck and hauled wood for many years. After enough of that he went to work for Skowhegan Vacuum Systems in Skowhegan until his retirement.

In 1976, Harold married the love of his life Pauline (Polly) Bickford. They were married for 42 wonderful years until her death on April 7, 2019. They loved going to the coast in the summer to enjoy lobsters and the ocean. In the fall they enjoyed harness races. In the winter they did many beautiful puzzles together. Harold also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. He loved his flower and vegetable gardens. One rose bush he had he called Seven Sisters. It was very prickly and you couldn’t go near the thing. It seemed like it would reach out and grab you. Harold brought it from the old homestead on the Drury Road in Solon, Maine, where he was raised.

Harold and Polly were members of the Calvary Pentecostal Church in Madison, Maine for many years. They made a lot of good friends there.

He is survived by his son Phil Gehrke and wife Jolyn of Skowhegan, grandson Dustin Washburn and granddaughter Rylee Gehrke, sister Charlene Lyons of Smithfield, brother Alden Mayhew and wife Julie of Moscow, Maine, sister-in-laws Carla Mayhew of Waterville and Rodene Withee of Madison.

He was predeceased by his wife Polly, parents James and Verna, brothers James Mayhew Jr., Arthur Mayhew, Norman Mayhew and sister Beatrice Towle.

The family would like to give special thanks to Pam Brown of Togus and Tammy Heatley and Judith Casella of Beacon Hospice.
