Phillip Smith Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Phillip Smith, who died after a
courageous battle with cancer on February 9th, 2025. He was 70 years old.
Born and raised in rural Leeds, Maine, Phillip was the son of Bruce Smith and Anna Smith and
was surrounded by the love of his two sisters and five brothers. After graduating Levit High
School, he went on to pursue social work and eventually earned his Master’s degree from Boston
University.
As a social worker, Phillip worked tirelessly for Spurwink Services for 23 years, creating some
of the most impactful programs in the state of Maine to support those in need. He finished his
social work career working for South Portland Housing Authority. Throughout all his years as a
social worker, his innovative approach and unyielding compassion helped transform lives, and he
leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.
Phillip was also a devoted husband and father. He found joy in every moment spent with his
family and was a constant source of support, wisdom, and humor. His sharp wit and his sarcasm
was matched only by his boundless love for his wife, Sue-Ann, his two daughters, Emma and
Isabelle, and the rest of his family.
Phillip had a deep love for his home, which he and his wife carefully restored over the years. He
loved his garden, where he found peace and satisfaction in watching things grow. Finally, he
loved his workshop, where he crafted, repaired, and built, always with an eye for precision and a
mind for innovation. His love for creativity extended to his lifelong passion for music,
particularly the Beatles, whose music filled his home and heart.
Phillip is survived by his brother Arthur Smith, his sister Margaret Dickson, his wife Sue-Ann
Smith, and his two daughters Emma Smith and Isabelle Smith. He was predeceased by his
parents Anna Smith and Bruce Smith, and his siblings Bruce Smith, Stanley Smith, Dorothy
Smith, Mark Smith, and William Smith.
A service will be held during the spring time (date to be determined) to celebrate his life and the
profound impact he had on those around him. In lieu of flowers, Phillip’s wishes were to have
money contributed to his daughters’ educational expenses.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His wit, kindness, and quiet strength will live on
in the memories of his family, friends, and the many lives he touched through his work and
passions. Rest in peace, Phillip. You made the world a better place, and your legacy will endure
in the beauty you created, the lives you changed, and the music you loved
