Madison, Maine – Stephen A Foshay, 79, passed away on June 26th, 2023 at Reddington
Fairview Hospital after a long battle with prostate cancer and heart disease. He was born the
son of Arthur Foshay and Marjorie Andersen on December 29th, 1942 in Portland, Maine.
Together with his big brothers and two best friends Donald Foshay Sr and Robert Foshay,
Stephen spent his formative years in the Redbank community of South Portland. At 13 years
old he moved to Madison with his father and stepmother, Etta Palmer Foshay. Etta raised
Stephen lovingly as he established lifelong bonds with his 2 half-sisters June Foshay and Julie
Foshay Friedman.
Eventually becoming a 50-year member of the Masons and the Shriners, Stephen spent the
rest of his life in Madison and was Grand Marshall of Madison-Anson Days on multiple
occasions. His incredible commitment to volunteer work was known by all of Madison as he
was the recipient of many commendations and awards from both the town and the state. In
February of this year, he won a Spirit of America Award for volunteerism and was honored by
the Maine State Legislature on Thursday, March 9th.
While working at the Foshay Madison/Anson Information Booth, Stephen’s smiling face could
be seen rain or shine as he guided tourists and held fundraisers for many different causes. He
was best known for being Madison’s Santa Claus for over 30 years, during which he received
hundreds of cards and letters from 3 generations of young people thanking him for being such
a huge part of their Christmas. Family and friends were everything to Stephen, and he loved
spending Christmas days with his nephew Bob and his family, as well as thanksgivings with
Donald Sr and his family.
Stephen was predeceased by his mother Marjorie Andersen Foshay, his father Arthur
Manchester Foshay, his stepmother Etta May Palmer Foshay and his brother Robert J Foshay.
He is survived by his brother Donald A Foshay Sr of Scarborough, Maine, as well as his half-
sisters June Foshay and Julie Foshay Friedman. He has nieces, nephews and cousins spread far
and wide across the country.
The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Robert Ward, whose dedication to
Stephen’s care over the years is most appreciated.
There will be a celebration of life on Sunday, July 16th, 2023 from 1 to 2:30 pm, followed by a
luncheon from 2:30 to 4:00 pm at the Somerset Abbey on 98 Main St in Madison, Maine.
