Sylvia Alice (Ingalls) Cowan, 74, passed peacefully and comfortably in her home on Monday
February 6, 2023. She was born on March 18, 1948 in Lebanon, NH to parents Harrison and
Edith (Sanborn) Ingalls. Later moving to Maine, she was a 1966 graduate of Madison High
School and continued her education at the Central Maine General Hospital School of Nursing in
Lewiston.
Sylvia married Dennis “Denny” Cowan in August of 1970, joining him soon after in Germany
where he was stationed with the U.S. Army. They later returned to Madison at the conclusion of
his service, welcoming son Adam and daughter Denise.
Sylvia continued her nursing career at RFGH eventually retiring to enjoy winters with Denny in
Florida and delighting in their grandchildren while in Maine. Sylvia and Denny were frequent
visitors to Walt Disney World in Florida but also greatly appreciated the peace of their rustic
woods cabin nestled streamside in Starks.
Though widowed in 2010, Sylvia had the good fortune of finding love and companionship again
spending the rest of her days with her committed partner and exceptional caregiver, Roger
Lightbody. In their 10+ years together, a wealth of memories were created including plenty of
Florida and camping stories of their own.
Sylvia is pre-decreased by her parents, Harrison and Edith, and her spouse Denny. She is
survived by her partner Roger, son Adam (Danielle) Cowan, daughter Denise (Kirt) Luce,
grandchildren Noah Cowan, Caleb Cowan, Aleya Luce, Kaden Luce, brother Kenneth Ingalls of
Embden, sister Geneva (Ingalls) Nelson of West Newfield, as well as her many nieces,
nephews, and dear friends.
Sylvia’s family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the team at Beacon Hospice for
their wonderful care, and to Gabby Hughes, Erin Lightbody, and Brenda Closson for the loving
support they provided to both Sylvia and Roger.
Friends and family are invited to attend a celebration of life on Saturday February, 18, 2023 at
noon. The service will be held at the Christ Community Fellowship, 43 Maple Street in Madison,
ME.
