Thomas Newell Obituary

Thomas E. Newell, 92, of Madison, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 17, 2024 at Redington Fairview General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Tom was born on May 18, 1931 in Bethel, Maine, son of Edward Sockalexis Newell and Wilma A. (Meserve) Newell. He graduated from Farmington High School Class of 1949 then married June Bradley in 1952.

Tom was employed at North Anson Reel for 40 years, of which he was foreman for 8 of those years. In his earlier days, he and his wife June owned Uncle Tom’s Kennels where they also raised Cocker Spaniel’s for over a decade. Tom was most known in the Madison community for owning and operating Newell's Second-Hand Shop where he and his wife bought and sold treasures for over 40 years. Tom was a member of the North Anson Methodist Church the Anson Grange Hall and a proud member of the Penobscot Nation of Old Town.

Tom enjoyed wintering in Florida, going to auctions and yard sales, and socializing with his many customers throughout the years. He was always up for telling a good story.

Tom absolutely loved country music. You could not enter his home without hearing country music playing in the background. In recent years, he enjoyed attending Country Sundays at the Embden Community Center where he met many friends. He enjoyed gifting to local charities, churches, high schools and friends.

Tom now joins loved ones who passed on before him; parents Edward and Wilma Newell; wife June Newell; sisters Ramona Mikula, Jacqueline Martin and Lois Dunbar; nephew Michael Gehrke; and his beloved dog Beauty.

Tom leaves behind his sister Sharon Estes and husband Daniel; nieces Tanya Pomerlow and husband Todd, Danielle Bannister and children Tristan and Marina, Gari Lynn Gehrke and daughter Leah; nephew Robert Bradley; several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews from Michigan and Texas. Also, Tom’s friends Sharon, Charlie, Mary, Rob & many more.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at 11:00 AM in Sunset Cemetery in North Anson.
